Spindle question

I'm either hallucinating or this is how we shortened spindles a bit

1 screw on old cone leaving the amount to be removed sticking out

2 clamp between 2 bits of wood in a vice, just before tightening completely, tap the spindle down so the cone jams nicely against the top of the wood, then tighten

3 take nice sharp file and file down the spindle to the top of the cone.

4 undo vice and pull up spindle and tighten again, screw down the locknut to expose more thread

5 bevel the cut edge with a file, smooth out the inside of the hollow spindle with small file.

6 unscrew cone over the cut edge and keep it box labelled "old cones"

7 Use emery paper to smooth out filed off areas.

Spin round and repeat......

Well, that's how I remember it :)

As an aside, we used files quite a bit to remove metal back in the 70's rather than a hacksaw blade or an angle grinder LOL

which brings me to the 80's and why on earth did the frame builder of the Carhall Frame I'm in the middle of slowly trying to get together fail to pick up a file and finish the dropout and flush it to the seat stay :(
