This bike has a bit of a story to it. I bought a Marin Hawk Hill for a mate as a hack bike, but it had a cracked frame and knackered forks. I drove a fair way to collect it so I took the eBay seller’s offer of a part-refund. Cooie then gave me the Specialized Hardrock frame forks for nowt.
I’ve used the Marin as a donor for the frame. So far I’ve spent:
£21 on the Marin
£6 on a carbon-wrapped seat post
£2 on a seat post shim
£3 on a stem.
From my spares box I’ve also replaced the chain and sprockets with a less-worn one, changed the awful budget v-brakes for STX cantis, replaced the saddle, fitted a cable hanger, ditched the Grip Shift for Rapidfires, greased some of the bearings (headset & rear wheel, I can’t remember if I did the front). I also nearly gave myself a hernia trying to remove the old bottom bracket from the frame! I then commuted on the bike for a few days this week to check was all ok and was pleasantly surprised how it rode.
I went to my friend's house today to deliver the bike (quite proud of the result I must say) and then realised as he towered over me that at 6 foot the bike is too small for him, damn it! So I really need a bigger bike, maybe a ~21” one. The top-tube on this is 22.5”, so 23”+ I think would be more suitable for him.
Wot you got? I'm in Woking, Surrey, so a local swap would be good.
