Specialized Epic Rear Shock

A friend has an Epic, and the rear shock blew itself apart on our ride this week :shock: - he had an oil and air shower, which was nice :roll: .

As he may not be keeping the bike (I may be splitting it - watch this space!), he wants to get a cheap replacement until he gets a new bike in a few weeks.

I understand the Fox developed shock, with the Specialized brain, has the stats 11.7" x 1.875" (which translates to ~ 297.18 mm x 47.63 mm).

I've had a look at CRC (etc etc) and tried to find a shock with those approx measurements but am struggling.

So, question is - what will fit? Am I limited only to the Fox/Spesh shock?

What year Epic was it? Quite a few problems with Epic shocks over the years; well documented in the Specialized forum on MTBR. There might also be some suggestions for after-market replacements, although you would lose the 'Brain' damper. Most seem to have been replaced on warranty though.

A friend of mine got through several shocks on her 08 Epic, while I'm still on the first. The difference is she rides hers, while I spend all my time fettling retrobikes... :roll:
