I Have a lovely set of Avid Arch rivals (the onest with the built-in hinged 'strong-arm' type bridge. Great COMPLETE MATCHING SET of brakes with the proper Avid fully adjustable levers. This was a very expensive early set of V-brakes, complete with 4 good pads and good condition throughout. Coming off the bike tonight after a change in direction and re-build of bike with a lower spec. Selling for what they cost me £45 delivered. SOLD

Completely off topic, but I'd love to see a photo of your 86 Explorer.

My first mountain bike was an Explorer from that very year.

Photo added of the Avids (that's a tounge-twister in itself).

They come with all original bolts, Avid noodles, and rubber lug-worms, and a nearly new set of matching WTB cartridge pads.

Off topic-I've attached a snap of my 'circa '86-88 Explorer - I've always been after a '89 with the bigger logos and 'fastback' seat stays, but beggers can't be choosers - this slightly tatty one was the best I could find/build, and it rides nicely with all new/refurbed period Suntour kit added - but they were built to last so its as solid as a rock - I had to pay more for the rear wheel covers and a period MF T-shirt than I paid for the original tatty bike. I still need a seat post for it as the one I have is damaged, and its a tricky size 26.2 or 26.4 I think - but its usable and a blast from the past. ... .Enjoy

That's how it all began (for me anyway - back in '88) - the early MF's ride suprisingly well (comfort-wise) on-road anyway due to the tall frames that were standard issue to all early MTBers compared to modern bikes - with 2' of seat post showing as standard. Although I must say I used to love the early Overbury's and Kona's with their cool sloping top tube XC racy-look with a long low 150mm stem - how things change eh!.

Are these parallel-pull type? With little parallelogram mountings for the blocks? I think I remember these from way back. I'm very interested if they're still available.

Cheers,

I believe these are as you describe 'parallogram' type - similar to the original XTR V-brakes. Still available if interested - crackingly good brakes, were far too good to let go with a bike I was selling so took them off and fitted regular canti's. They are just about the best V-brakes I've ever tried (power and modulation-wise), and I've had quite a few. Therefore I'm happy either way to keep them for stock or sell to fund some other purchases.

You've sold them to me then! I'll send you a PM. Gonna look great. Just need some forks to mount them on now!
