I bought the bike from a local internet classified ad, hoping to switch the Mavic parts onto an ongoing restoration project. When I picked it up, I realized that it is worth its own restoration project, but that I should stay focused on my own and pass this along complete to someone with real passion for Gitane.
The clear coat and the wheels are the low points of the bike as it stands. The clear coat has lost its gloss in some areas of the frame, which you can clearly see in the picture of the BB shell. The clincher wheels are built with mis-matching, non-Mavic hubs, Campy 8 speed cassette rear, and Shimano 600 front.
Gitane produced many Team and Replica bikes for sale to the public, and it would take a real expert to explain them all. However, very few of those bikes appear to have been built with the hanger for a race number under the top tube like this bike. I have cross-checked the initials hand-painted onto the wheels with the members of the 1992 RMO/Gitane/Mavic team, and can't find a match. However, this is another sign that this bike may have been attached in some way to that team.
In any case, I have seen lots of lookers on the local on-line auction site, but no bidders yet. Since I am in Switzerland, shipping will likely be high to the UK or USA, but I will let you decide if this bike is worth a punt.
Asking USD 400 before shipping. More pictures available on request. Thanks for your time and consideration!
