Ok, so I’ve got a set of Shimano XTR BR-M951 V-brakes that I took off of a near scrapped Y-Trek & now want to put them on Our Jimmy’s Marin Shoreline...

They “cleaned up” ok, well cosmetically at least. But are a bit sticky/rough in operation.

They’ve had long soaks in all sorts of loving juices, but still are stiff and creaky/crunchy.

Does anyone have any hints or tips regarding a full strip down before I make some irreversible mistake?

Re:

They are pretty easy to work on, and you have the instructions to follow. I've done a few sets myself so can share a bit of knowledge.

Most important thing is to to take your time, be gentle and be methodical.

If you want to reuse the black discs you need to remove, try not to bend them when you remove them.

The bits on the rear that hold the spring in place pop off with a thin blade.

Grub screw allows you to remove the pivot bolt.

Cone spanners help remove the bearing cover. Clean, grease and refit and ensure free movement without play.

If you have plat in the linkage, you can fit shims to tune it out. Disc rotor spacers work, but other DIY options like come can can work if you like a bodge.

Pop it all back together and press it tight. The pin gets in the way so if using a vice, make sure you put something that sits higher than the pin. You break that, its curtains.

Once the grub screw is back in, you might be lucky and the black discs are still sticky. Unlikely so you may need a dab of glue around the edge.

Rinse and repeat 3 more times. Job is done and you'll have tight, play free and smooth brakes.

At least if my memory serves. I may have missed something but the instructions will point out any gaping holes in my memory.

Once done, sit back and enjoy your handiwork.

I've used coke can shims like these on rattling XT's. XTR's have been ok do far.

Cheers gents. So nothing really to worry about, just good old RTFM.....

Re:

I have step by step photos I had taken of the steps.
But never out them up.
I'm sure I remember someone else doing similar a few months later and they are somewhere on the forum.
