Shimano link fixing washer

Anyone know what this is for? Does it stop the pad from moving separately to the brake body?

In the Shimano pdf for the M960 V-brake, the "link fixing washer" is just the thin washer that sits under the main mounting bolt:

The part number (Y-8AA49000) is the same as for the M739 unit, so I assume it's the same part.

You had me thinking for a minute that it might be the kit to stop the bloody things rattling. I don't think you can get those for M739 Vs any longer, can you?

No, I thought they would stop the links from moving and therefore stop them feeling so spongey
