The plastic cylinder covering the spring pulling the jockey cage back is broken.

I got the mech thrown in when I bought another several years ago, at the time I glued it optimistically and went into spares box. Well it came out and clearly its not strong enough so either need a replacement cyclinder or some other cylinder type thing. While the end fillting into the body is moulded including one end of the spring, where it fits in means it appears to work even with the crack. Just wondering if anyone else seen this, seems a weak point.

Should mention it was only being used as a tensioner on a single speed, so not under huge stress.

The same has happened on mine. Also the plastic setting for the H & L adjustment screws has chipped. I suppose 35-40 year old plastic will deteriorate. It doesn't seem to affect the gear changing though.

have you run it a long time broken ?

With the plastic broken the location of one end of the spring is a bit more "variable" as there does not appear to be a hole in the metal body just where the plastic sits. It was on the Mrs bike and I swapped it for my other working one, I didn't want her stranded or worse chain coming off just as she navigated the Ring Road on the way to work.

It's a shame a nice looking and working derailleur is let down by a bit of ***** plastic. Guess they didn't expect it still to be in use 35 years later.

I took that bit off completely as needed the extra bit of thread to get the limit screws to fix the derailleur in place for use just as a tensioner and reduce risk might decide to "change gear" with a big bump. Just lose the H/L lables.

I’ve been doing up my two 1981-82 Motobecane Super Sprints. Although I’ve only just finished them I’ve used the one, albeit infrequently, for the last few years with no issues.

Re:

thanks jimd. anyone else, don't suppose someone has one lurking in the spares box, I may try finding some tubing and see what can be "fabricated" although can just run, may put zip tie round it ?
