whats the difference between triple and double front mechs

Triple is for 3 chainrings
double is for 2
one won't reach while the other will. Plus the number of teeth difference between the chain rings will be different that the mech will change between. My double 105 allows 12 teeth difference between big ring and small ring.

so i have double 105 chainring would a triple 105 mech work

Should be ok. As long as the stop screw settings are ok. So not pushing the chain off. My double 105 is on double 46, 34 rings. Settings are close but work.
