Self extracting crank bolts

For square taper cranks . After reading the odd horror stories i am reluctant the use them . However they seem ideal if taking a bike aboard ie flying .
Apart from the theft risk ? and problems due to poor fitting during assembly are there any other issues with them ?

I've never ever taken cranks off to fly.
Pedals and wheels, yes. Cranks, no.

And tbh, I'd not want to use self extractors on a square taper, it's a lot of load through a little bolt. And a proper integrated crank extractor is small enough anyway.

even roche's carerra team of 1987 didn't use them on the corsa record cranks! you can't beat good old fashioned hex bolts. and like the previous chap said, there's no need to take cranks off for travel. pedals will suffice.

I have to differ here....I've used Sugino Autex bolts on many different square taper BBs with no problems whatsoever.
The system uses roughly the same size bolts and the same crank threads as a 'proper' extractor. I wouldn't trust any Ti or aluminium lightweight models, but the Sugino one is fully steel.

Sure, you shouldn't need to take your cranks off when travelling/flying, but using Autex bolts does mean that you definitely don't need to carry (or find) a special thin socket, 14mm spanner or extractor should it be needed during a tour.
