Santa Cruz Heckler

Old School Hero
OK, maybe not that retro here folks but...

Wonder if anyone can help me out with a query I've got about a Heckler I've recently started to build up. First of all dating it, I've attached a pic. No disk tabs, non replaceable rear mech hanger and the serial looks like 97ZK01505 but it's unclear so could be 972K01505. I presume it's a '97 (or could it be a 2001?). Cheers, Andrew

Yeah, 97 rather than 2001.
Mine was a V-brake frame like yours and had a 98****** frame number.
They added a disc tab on the rear swing arm in.... ?2000 (maybe).

Hope you enjoy it!
I loved mine. Handled great and never gave me a moment's trouble.

A definite classic IMO.

cool, thanks mate. was just surprised it wasn't newer given general condition etc. not really so much of a 'retro' brand i guess but makes it as old as some of the rides on here. well, the frame at least, she's being built up with modern components. good to hear you liked yours, pretty much everything i've read about these bikes has been very positive. thanks again.

Definitely 97 or earlier and very nice indeed. And in my book the 97 Heckler is retro, it just happens to keep up with modern bikes very well. I still ride mine regularly in a modern spec. But with new rigs in the stable, I am just about to go all retro on the heckler again. I built a custom Heckler from a frame ordered in 97 and it has almost the same build details. The differences are:

Disc tabs: mine has IS disc tabs on the rear swingarm
Cable stops: The rearmost cablestops on the top tube are not staggered on mine but that could be a size thing, mine is a Large with the bent top tube.
Decals: my letters had black centres where yours are all silver
Seat stay brace: mine was black anodised and yours appears wider. What is the travel on the blue frame? Mine was 115mm or 4.5"

All Hecklers of that age have solid rear dropouts no replaceable hangers. Other details that differentiate to look out for:

Swingarm pivot mounts: I've seen older frames where the swingarm pivot mount plates brace the down and seat tube. This was notably so on the Tazmon and I think also on very early Hecklers.
Swingarm uprights: the one here and also mine have smooth outer surfaces to the upright members of the swingarm. This means all machining is on the inside. Older and then again later frames have machined outside surfaces also.
Seat stay brace: AFAIK The bolted on brace behind the seat post changes just a little in many years.

97-98 there was Heckler and a Heckler Superlight model side by side in the range. Sometime they dropped the Heckler and continued with the Superlight only. And then later still the Heckler name was re-introduced besides the Superlight on all new, burlier 145mm travel frames.

Keep us posted on your progress,

Enjoy!!

No problems, contact me anytime,
It's good to see another Heckler here

Heres my frame just after the respray, and you've inspired me to post pictures of it built up in the bikes section too. http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29696

Enjoy!

As mentioned above, disc tabs appeared between 1997 and 1998 - mine's a 1998 with tabs. That's not the original shock on the blue one, they all came with Vanilla Rs at the time. Here's mine:

Nice one Mike, one sweet ride you've got there.
Amazing how a '98 frame blends in 10 years on.

Do you have good close ups of the decals on your frame maybe? They look in very good nick indeed and I'd like some new ones made up in the original style, so need a good example image. You have PM.

Enjoy!!

can't see mike's bike :( on my works laptop via 3g and it restricts everything

i believe the shock on my frame was a fox rl2, shock/frame was then sent to tf tuned where it was serviced, PUSHed, had new pivot bearings and modern pivot axle fitted. that was just before the previous owner stopped using it, bought a turner 5 spot and then sold it to me :D

posted a newer built up shot in the readers bikes section...

I replaced the pivot bearings in mine about three months ago. I've had the frame since new and, er, never replaced them before. Yes, the back end was kind of floppy and the old bearings, once removed, only rotated about 30 degrees :-)
