My old phone used to randomly turn itself off and shoving a Tesco receipt down one end of the battery compartment cured it.

Have you got the latest version of android running?
Using an earlier version can cause all sorts of issues with other apps (both standard and downloaded)
My wife's phone was 3 generations out of date before she relented and let me update. Took about 20 minutes and solved all the power, call dropping, screen dying issues and got a shiny new interface.
Even if the phone is box fresh, it may be 6 months or more out of date.
