I pressed him for detail on the frame and got this:

Hi, no idea what the alloy is. I presume it's aluminium based. Serial is gc3800034. There is also another number stamped there cm166rr27. The rear dropouts are stammped with the word Kinesis

Doesn't really leave me any the wiser :?

He claims US handbuilt but i'm sceptical.

dont kinesis build frames for lots of people, in taiwan

I had a feeling that Merlin Cycles 'Malt' frames were built by Kinesis? Not sure really, it might just mean that the dropouts were made by Kinesis or even that it's just the replaceable mech hanger :?

EDIT: Either way £31 is a great price as even the Taiwanese frames are pretty decent and very light.

I wonder if he always thought he was riding around on a 'custom' bike

frame

Yup, bought by me, and it's a Kenisis, as the replaceable drop-out has the name on it.
Not a bad frame, anodised not painted, and seems to be fairly light.
Not exactly what I was after but what the hell, it'll do for something
