rooting amazon kindle

Am just wondering if anyone has done this and what the results were. I'm using a kindle as it came from factory and its quite restricted in the way of apps and such. I've looked online at how to do it but I'm not going to do it if it's not gonna work or work badly.

I got a Fire HD about 18 months ago and did it straight away, just a case of "side loading" apps from apk mirror, too limiting otherwise...
Worked fine for me, some apps fall over sometimes or show an error but works fine

What do you mean "side loading" apps?
Better crack on then got to be better than running it as it is now. Amazon don't even have a youtube app. Not that I've found anyway.
Thanks gil great help as lots I've found online say not to do it, may be because of warranty etc but I'm not fussed for that as I bought it 2nd hand anyway for £12. Just something to use for surfing and a few apps and games as I'm forever losing or breaking phones. This way I can just use a cheap phone that I don't have to worry about losing or breaking.

Also forgot to ask, is there a best or easiest guide to use?
I don't have a pc or laptop so looking for a way just using kindle and another tablet for internet access to read the guide etc.

Google is your friend, too involved to explain here

I've always used "apk mirror" to download apk files from with no issues

Yeah I've looked on Google but it all gets a bit complicated for me there lol. I'm gonna do it next time I'm at parents where I can use computer I think.
