Hi

Thought Id put this up as I will probably have sell it on soon to allow me complete a couple of projects that have stalled. Its been through a few members on here, I bought this from Dave (Daj) nearly 2 years ago?! It is my main bike and has been through a few spec changes in that time. I made a few changes to suit and get a feel for the bike, the first ride I pushed it and it did everything I asked of it no problems. It made me sell my Prestige! as this was a better fit and I needed to pilfer some of the components from it.

When I took it apart ready to build up to my spec I wanted to try some RC35s because I'd seen a mock up of one that Jez-4-max-bikes had done with a black crown, also had a black steel brace as well - looked wicked. Managed to get a black crowned fork, they were AB's, I removed the decals to keep it simple:

One issue I found straight away was when I moved the front mech over from my Prestige, I had the limit screw to start at the middle ring, when I moved it across it didn't line up with the chainring, also I noticed the LH BB cup was a couple mm proud of where it should have been - after measuring the BB shell I discovered it was 66mm?! Definitely 2mm from the drive side because of how the mech did not line up. Bizare! I don't why - perhaps to accommodate a chain device? You can see I have got round it by using a King BB spacer (2.5mm but close enough)

The fork did mean I could go over anything but it was at the expense of the excellent handling of the rigid fork, I prefer rigid any day, so curiosity satisfied I went back to the rigid set up and my fast bike was back!

Final change was to swap the Hope wheels over for my black XT/RM20 wheels, the Hope freehub sound does my nut it! It doesn't work in the countryside, Chris King even more so! The spec is M730, thumbies but with Real levers which are excellent. The main vibe was black & white but also steel so the aluminium Syncros went and the creaking sound along with it! Tioga prestige seatpost plus Tioga T-bone and Prestige handlebar so I added some weight but it is much better, I like steel and that is that! The wheels also added a bit of weight but I had the wheels built from NOS hubs/rims so I put ceramic bearings in so they roll really well I can recommend it, I also put ceramic bearings in the NOS cup & cone BB, this works really well, there is no drag sensation (there isn't really anyway with the standard steel bearings compared to UN71 I know!) you can really appreciate this by spinning the crank and watching the rotations. UN71's are so viscous with grease by comparison, you fell like your wading through it!

Re:

That's a really nice practical classic bike.

I have not tried mine rigid, but I find the DB is such a dependable ride.

Re:

Lovely, classic. As everyone says, you'd be mad to sell but... PLEASE let me know if you do decide to pass this on!

Re:

What a great bike. Nice to see it in the classic black and white. Definitely what a DB should be in (sorry Neil  ).

I think it looks ace with the rigid forks too.

Stick it in the british steel thread to keep that one going...

Black and white is SO 1990's... your living in the past Gio, quit living in the past!

I like living in the past where bikes are concerned...just the way I am...

Anything else I'm on it :)

Re:

A word on living in the past: My bike has £12 black 7 speed cassette on it:

Some people may say Im living in the past with 25 year old technology, get with the program, things have moved on, now 25 years later, we've got the £169 (discounted mind!) black 7 speed cassette!:

Such innovation from the same people who brought you larger diameter, heavier, wheels. That'll improve the cycling experience no end!

When it comes to bikes Im living in the past for good reason, until the modern day 'innovators' pep up their ideas it is gona stay that way!
