Hello
I have started to assemble my rebuild but before I do have just checked all of the parts going on.
One area which is a problem which brake and gear levers would you all suggest, I'm keeping the Shimano XTR RD-M900 stuff which the bike already had and which were original to the spec however at some point the gear/brake leavers were changed over. The one I have have seen better days so the question is what shall I use, can they still be had if so from where.

As high lighted before all the gearing and drivetrain is the XTR RD-M900, the brakes are not, I have been told that they are CMC machined V brake prototypes back in the day, I will up load some photos if of interest.

So what would you fit ?

I think it depends on your own preference of shifters, so if you don't fancy thumbies (XT M732 thumbshifters have an eighth 'click' to run the 8spd XTR) or Grip Shifts with separate brake levers, then in keeping with the rest of the M900 theme I suppose only M900 or M950 (XTR with the selector windows) combined shifters/levers would do.

You could also look for M900 RF+ shifters and mount them with separate clamps if you fancy using different levers like the exotic Pauls or Grafton levers. I personally think Dia Compe levers would also suit the DOGS.

There's usually a set of M900 shifters/levers to be found in the for sale section, they're not too uncommon.

Maybe look for other owners' DOGSBOLX builds for inspiration/ideas :) Happy hunting.

Re:

You'll need to check whether you need 'v' specific brake levers for the prototype brakes you mention (the cable pull varies). M900 combination will only do cantis, so that'll influence your decision. As Regan says, there are some clamps which enable you to split off the M900 shifter pod.
As for shifters, I've seen DOGS with all sorts (including a magazine review with Gripshift), xt thumbs, campag stuff, upside down DX thumbies (Loretz's bike). So really your choice!
If I was rebuilding mine, I'd go for xt thumbies and Ritchey Logic / Dia Compe SS7 levers (for cantilevers).

Ahh good point! I hadn't thought of cantis versus V-brakes which will affect lever choice.
