My mate RTS on a ride at the weekend.

Take a used M231 Mavic rim. 2.2 tyre. Lots of pressure. A few rutty fields.

Explosion.

Check out the rim wall - it spliced straight through the inner tube. Never seen a rim do this before.

Anyone have a 32 hole m231 for sale?

I've heard of this happening before, it's usually caused when your rims are so worn from braking that they become concave, very thin and eventually start to crack. Before you know it KABLOOIE!

Once my rims are starting to go concave, the rule-of-thumb I use is that if it'll take 100psi in a fat tyre, it'll probably survive my next ride. I've only managed to blow one rim using this method, made a very loud noise indeed... I'd not recommend doing it in a confined space (like I did...).

used to see this alot when i was in the trade. worst i've heard about from a customer was it happening to a rear, but before the tyre/tube blew the rim started to peel off in a strip, then the peel hit the rear brake and went off to the left just as the leg was coming round and it dug into the guys calf!

luckily he wasn't going very fast but it cause a horrible mess on his leg.

also it happened to glen longland a couple of winters ago, his front wheel gave out, think he did his hip or pelvis as a result.

I've seen this happen lots of times. Worst was on a mates front rim at about 50km/h when 3/4 of the rim blew away. Luckily the tyre blew down around the hub and not around the cantis.

Most annoying was at the top of a 14km single track descent for a mate who after 50km of climbing had to walk down in heavy rain.

A lot of places I ride are particularly harsh on rims particular when wet where the fine gravel forms a great grinding paste - rims don't last longer than one wet winter. these days if the trails are damp its either ceramic rims of discs for me.
