Ridgeback 603GS

hondated

Retro Newbie
First of all hi to everyone,I have just found this site and joined. Its great to read some of the threads and look at pictures of bikes that were common as they say back in the day.
Having ridden the Ridgeback for some years, having brought it second hand from my LBS it eventually ended up with my son in law who never really rode it but fortunately some years later I have managed to get it back.
The questions I would like to ask is can someone give me a rough date on when this model was first made and having never really taken it over the rough stuff, I know I know, now at the age of 60 before it gets too late I would like to venture out in the wilds so can I ask given it has no suspension would the bike be able to cope with doing it.
Oh yes I should add that I do not to intend to try and copy the Athertons although I really do wish I was young enough to.
Oh and one more question is it worth buying a cheap set od Sus forks and would any from another Ridgeback fit.
I will try and post a picture of it soon.

Welcome Hon. From memory Ridgeback used that number for quite a few years in the early 90's. If it's a really early version you might struggle for a fork (although it can be done). If it's later, say towards mid 90's, fitting a short travel fork should be fine. Get some pictures up as they will tell all.

Hi, the bike should be more than capable of handling a variety of off-road terrain, just ensure you've give the bike a check over before venturing out into the wilds, you don't want to have a mechanical issue out on the moors!

Suspension forks would probably be a good idea, if you're not used to riding a bike off-road then a fully rigid mountainbike can be a bit of a boneshaking experience, some simple suspension forks will take the edge off things.
As already mentioned though, which forks to go for will depend on when the bike dates from (later frames will have suspension corrected geometry) and to some extent whether it has a 1" or 1" 1/8th headset etc, someone on here will have more info on the frame though.
