ridgeback 502gs bottom bracket threading

Retro Newbie
I acquired an old ridgeback 502 gs, essentially for the frame. Probably mid 90s. It had an old adjustable bottom bracket in which came out easily enough. Was this bottom bracket supplied as standard from new on those bikes?
Have tried screwing in a new shimano un55 square taper in but am having problems. Goes in a bit on drive side then stops and i can't get it any further. I stress that i am turning anti clockwise on drive side. On the non drive side the metal sleeve of the UN55 goes in smoothly all the way in.

Is there something odd about the threads on these bikes. I am using a standard british threaded BB. Surely ridgeback never used italian threading? It has been suggested to me that it could possibly be old raleigh threading but did anyone other than raleigh use this?
Am keen to research this before getting too far in. If anyone needs more info before advising, just ask away.

Re:

I had a ridgeback back then and it had a normal bb. Have you tried turning clockwise till it clicks before you tighten anticlockwise?

Can you not compare and muse the rh cup of the bb rgat came with it and the shimano

I.e. direction of thred, diameter and tpi?

Cup/ ball BBS have short cup threads so you may need to clean the frame threads to allow the longer sealed bb to go in.
