retrofitting later shifters onto earliest 7spd combo levers?

Has anyone managed to retrofit a later 9 speed shifter onto one of the early combo units which I think were 7 speed DX and XT (and had a single central securing bolt for the shifter bit)

I was going to cut off the shifter bit, but then wondered...

Re:

You could swap m900 and similar era Shimano shifters around or find aftermarket mounts for just the shifter pods, but I doubt anything newer would work as the design of the shifters and mounts changed. With the m900 style, the shifter pod was essentially a separate piece that could be bolted on, these days the upper part is a cover designed specifically to fit to the lower, so not even modern parts are that interchangeable.

Where there's a will there's a way, but not sure how strong willed you would have to be to make this work.

Theres two types of clamp and no they dont work with each other. Older models of XTR, XT/DX and later LX were interchangeable but as soon as STX ST-M37 appeared, the design changed.

these are the same levers as used in the STi with the little piston. Use them with a set of 9spd shifters and you should be hunky dory.

Use a 9spd chain on the old mechs/ chainset too and they'll be fine.

But do use a 9spd cassette

and hub

I presume you want to do it because the original shifter broke. If that's the case, you need to cut the pod, it's too close to the handlebar to allow any shifter to be installed close enough to the grips. I've done it with an LX shifter, and my front DX shifter is also about to die...

If it's too much hassle, road levers for flat bars work with cantilever and can be bought separately for about 10 EUR online.

thanks all. I was just wondering what the possibilities were with them. There are too many around at present not just to use the proper stuff at present... but re-using would be good, especially where the kit is light or high quality....
