retro build up drivetrain question?

Dirt Disciple
Hi
Being a novice on vintage parts my question is
I am building up a vitus carbone 9 want pretty much period parts
am building it with dura ace where possible but cant stretch to the 8 speed sti shifters so
going down the route of index downtube shifters a dura ace rear mech
and was looking into a 6 speed index screw on freewheel.
As I would like to get some use out of it more than a museum piece
a 14x28 cassette would suit the hills of the peaks. So to make that work
would that mean going for the later 7402 rear mech as that was designed for the 8 speed which would work better on a bigger cog?
than the 7401 which after a bit of searching was designed for a 26t tops.

All advice gladly welcomed
cheers Stef

Sorry, not an answer but have you looked on the Sheldon Brown web pages? If no info there then you may have to try and see if it works. (I took this approach and and am using an RX100 7 speed rear mech with RX100 8 speed shifters/brake levers and an 8 speed ultrashift cassette and it all works fine. The reason is that the shifters would have been monstrously expensive on UK eBay but came in under £20 from eBay France, including post. So try France and/or experiment.)
