Replacing a screw-on freewheel help

I need to replace a 6 speed screw-on freewheel on a Miche solid axle hub. I've only ever had to service freehubbed wheels so looking for a bit of advice here!

Can I safely fit a 7 or 8 speed freewheel in its place? The mech is a 9 speed Tiagra with friction shifters, so shouldn't be a problem there... I'm happy with 6 speed, so just replace with the same?

Cheers

There are two types of 6 speed - some are a 'compact 6' which is thinner and uses the same spacing IIRC as 7 speed. Provided you don't have the compact 6 you will be fine.

It doesn't look compact and fits a 6spd chain. I'll just stick with 6 to keep things simple!

Next question, can you get cheap n cheerful freewheels in less than 14t? Had a look online an unless I want to spend money that seems to be the smallest sprocket size.

I used to run 12's on a TT bike in the 70's, due to the number of teeth in contact they never ran smoothly and were susceptible to jumping if a tad out of were not brand new....

Buy a bigger chainring :D
