repainting a old/splatter job Kona

Has anyone ever attempted to strip down & repaint an old Kona splatter job?
From what I can make out the paint between them is all pretty random and would be hard to replicate, so not sure whether to give it a go or just stick to one shade all over...which would lose a bit of its retro charm..

I would give it a try on a piece of scrap metal first, scaffold pole perhaps, practice your technique and see what you can come up with.
