Remove surface rust Zolatone paint?

Hi,

I know is not a mountbike bike but I've just pick up this Marin Stinson to use as my commuter.

It seems to be all original with 100gs groupset.

It's been stuck in a garage for the last 15-20 years and has surface rust on the frame. Is there a way to clean it up without damaging the paint?

I don't know how hard wearing the Zolatone paint is but I've had success on similar rust using the scourer side of a washing up sponge and WD40. It wont magically remove it but it will certainly improve the appearance. If you're worried that's too abrasive even a toothbrush and a good spray of WD40 will work to a certain degree. I may get shouted at for suggesting this but I always test on a hidden part of the frame first and so far I've had no issues.

Fabricate some kind of shallow bath and pour a few litres of white vinegar in it. Dunk the frame (and any other rusty parts) into the bath for a few hours and the rust will wipe off.
