what is the cleanest safest easiest way of removing anodising?
i have a faded red hope headset that is missing a couple of parts, i figured the easiest way of making it all match is to take it back to silver and buy silver replacement parts.
has anyone done this?
how would i do it?

I've done this on a few bits.. must stress the safety aspects however... make sure you have a well ventilated area.. gloves, mask eye protection etc.... safety first and all that..

Right

Select components.. mix up a solution of caustic soda ,, submerse the said item into the caustic,, leave for a few mins,,, you'll see the ano turning black and then remove and use a fine 0000 wire wool and scrub,, re-do if needed.. :) and then polish using fine grades of wet and dry and autosol etc.. :)

Job done.. :)

Caustic will be fine if you remember to neutralise it in water and plenty of it.......I melted my finger nails out with caustic once.....no gloves

I've never had a problem with pitting with caustic soda... and if you buy it in granule form you can mix the strength :)

Obviously if the item is left in for a prolonged period of time it may cause pitting but never experienced myself..

Here's a set of cranks I did..
