recovering data from dead laptop

The only thing you'll have to do is take ownership of your files again.

Log on as admin (you'll probably already be admin) on the new machine and and when you come across a folder you can't access you'll have to take ownership of it and its subfolders etc.

In my computer/explorer go tools > folder options > view > turn off simple file sharing.

Now when you right click on folder you can't access you'll have security options open to you and you can take ownership of the folder.

This gives you a more in depth guide.

I didn't need to do that, just dragged and dropped or 'send to', no more hassle than that :D

Depends on the versions of the OS, XP Home or Pro and if you had user accounts or deleted an account to start again etc.

Permissions in XP don't always go the way you think they should which can be very frustrating if you're in a rush or you think your drive is dying!

Didn't think you could boot xp from an external drive ?

I think I would have got an adapter and used the IDE drive in another laptop to get the stuff onto a spare flash stick .

No need to try and boot from it, it will function as an external drive quite happily. iTunes is easy to recover if you can get at your library folder, the "Database" is actually a massive XML file which lives in a folder in "My Documents" and can be edited with a Text Editor like Notepad if you need to change drive letters or paths. Might be easier to start a new library though and import the contents of the old folder into it unless you have masses of ratings or custom tags or such like.
