Has anyone got an re croming done before. Was thinking about buying some old cranks cheap and then getting them done (rather than buying some nice original expensive ones) but not sure where to start.
Unless its something rare or valuable the cost of re-chroming isn't usually worth it. 'I know a man' who will do chrome plating for cash but it still around £40 for a chainset.
Rechroming is all about time taken to polish the old metal ,trying to remove pitting etc.So unless this is done the result can be crap.
Also the base plate is vital, nickel is the norm some use copper.
What sort of cranks are you looking for? I maybe able to help, without you having to break the bank.
Be warned about handle bar stems.Check the size with a verney gauge.
I failed to do this once  As a result i cannot get the stem into the fork steerer {to good a plating job.}Picture here.
