Guys, I picked up a '96 Stumpy Comp FS off the 'bay. Mechanically it's pretty rocking but at some point during its life some idiot sprayed the rear end bright yellow (front end is stock dark blue), added S-Works decals and worst of all, airbrushed a bunch of most unmanly stars on the seatstays and top tube. The ugly yellow paint is also letting go in a major way in all the usual places.

So, I'm thinking of spraying it matte-black in the nastiest way possible, give it some punk-rock attitude. What do you think?

It's got some pretty eyecatching parts on it and Serious Mountainbike Stance, so it won't look like I put Hammerite over a Halfords bike or something.

In this case i'd personally say no, on a BMX or jump bike maybe, but on a sweet Xc bike, prob no, get a jazzy paint job or powdercoat IMO. though if frame looks dented otr abused, go rat rod away, your bike your rules. :D

Don't forget to lower it, wrap a load of old rope around the handlebars and fit a rack with an old beer cooler and a cart with a handle on it.

One of my pals has an Aluminium O, owned from new. The paint flaked off after 6 months and Orange resprayed it black for him. It now looks matt, and has lots of scrapes and chips.

The whole bike has a functional, no messing Mad Max look about it and is frankly desperately cool.

Do it.

BITD one of my friends bought a brand new Ritchey and the first thing he did was spray the whole bike a Satin black-which is in between matte and glossy-and the bike looked awesome, like a Stealth Bomber!
