Raleigh with Cinelli bottom bracket shell - RESOLVED

Devout Dirtbag
Does anyone know what diameter the hole in the shell to fix (pop rivet) the cable guide to it should be/would have been?

I have an original 1987 653 frame and a similar age 531c frame. Both have Cinelli shells. The 653 has the guide pop riveted to it. The 531 has been repainted some years ago and had a push fit (and glue!) guide which I want to replace with the pop rivet one. The hole in the shell is 7mm but in the guide (same one as on the 653) it is 5mm - first issue.
I have put a cartridge bottom bracket in so I guess the space between it and the shell is not much more than 1mm - second issue....
I thought a 2 piece mate rivet was the most likely solution. I'd rather not strip the 653 apart to see if I can spot what was used. 7mm seems odd against a 5mm guide hole. It could have been drilled to take the push fit guide.

Anyone happen to know??

Re:

First, the size of hole you drill isn't going to affect frame strength or performance if the hole is too big. After all many BBs are slotted with much meat removed. An M5 bolt is the typical size if you want an absolute answer.

If you're worried about room inside the BB I have sometimes used a machine bolt with a flat head inserted from inside and the nut on the outside. May not be apt for a concourse bike, but perfectly serviceable.

Am I right in guessing the 653 is the red, white, green one and the 531 is the red, white, blue one. I had the latter BITD?

Re: Raleigh with Cinelli bottom bracket shell

It`s trying to find the bolt you describe that is the hassle. I had thought it was going to be a simple pop rivet but oh no. B&Q etc do not keep stuff they don`t sell loads of.

Yes you're right on the 653 colours. The other has been painted white blue and yellow so not sure.

Thanks for your advice.

Re:

try threading (tapping) in a bottle cage bolt in. Remember, it doesn't take any weight - the cable tension keeps it tight against the BB. you just need something to hold its position from slipping

Re: Raleigh with Cinelli bottom bracket shell

Fixed this with a barrel bolt with a nut on the end. Had to file the head down a bit so the cartidge did not foul on it, but it does the job and gets the cable lined up:-)
