Raleigh Rapide restoration job

TomboE_Clapham

Retro Newbie
Hi there
I have just become the proud owner of a Raleigh Rapide - it seems in decent condition and other than new tyres is in original form. The paint is a bit chipped in places and I am wondering where I can get the paint from. It's hard to find any details about the bike online - although I have no idea where the serial number is which might help. If anyone can offer some friendly advice as to how/whether I can restore it to former glory that would be massively appreciated.

Re:

A low end model but oh so stylish, looks great and a fairly straightforward resto job. Good luck and keep us posted! :)

Re:

Thanks guys. That's awesome. I knew it was an entry level bike but agree with your sentiments re looking cool. In all the years I have owned modern carbon fibre bikes no one has ever stopped me to comment on a bike. That changed when I got this classic. Really pleased.

I'll start with some easy questions of anyone could be do kind to help.
- where can I get some new (but original) handlebar tape - the current tape is the original and frankly pretty dirty...
- any ideas on whether I should repaint it - there are a lot of scratches when you get up close. If so are there any good places to get paint and sticker decals...
- the rest of it seems in great nick.

Thanks again for input thus far

Very nice! Looks to be very original. And the paint looks far too good to warrant a repaint. It's only original once. Clean and polish; see where that gets you. I'd try to save the bar wrap as well if it's still in one piece. If it's vinyl, a mild detergent and some elbow grease should do wonders.
I wouldn't mind a few more pics, either.

Re:

I concur with the comments of non-fixie. Keep the paint original it's looks to be pretty good and a few scratches here and there add to the character.

If the tape is cotton then it's still readily available Google Velox tape.
