Going on my limited knowledge of Raleighs of that era, this bike would have had (probably chrome) 700c wheels on it originally.

I'm pretty sure 700cs were by and large the norm at Nottingham by then. Even the very old-school Routier (cheapish 10-speed "touring" style model, again with chromed rims) had them.

Thanks David. I will be looking for a front wheel to match the rear. The new tyres I have can be used.

I have been rebuilding my bike today. I have not painted it, and the original stickers are on it until I can find some new ones.
I had removed the front forks before, so today, I cleaned the bearings, checked them and they are like new. I greased them up and rebuilt the front end.
I stripped the brakes and cleaned and polished them. I hope you can tell in the [pics. They will show up better when on the bike and in the sun or in natural light
Unpolished

Polished

Then I cleaned and fitted the rear derailleur. This was tricky as it seemed the mounting bolt didnt want to go in at first. I struggled, cleaned the threads on the frame and mount bolt. Eventually, I got it on thye frame. It looks a lot better then the one that was fitted when I got the bike.

I changed the gear levers for some metal ones I had

Fitted the new seat post and put a black saddle on

Cleaned the chainset

I took the white tape off the handlebars, polished the levers and fitted the bars back on the bike. Final set up will be when the wheels are on.

I did take some pics of the black handlebar tape I put on, but my camera is a bit ropey and I often lose pics I have taken. I will take some of the b ars when i have put the wheels on. New wheels, tyres and inner tubes is the next job to be done. Set up the gears and brakes and all will be done.
