Raleigh Eclipse 501 - newbies first buy, need some help

I can sort out some shifters but do the cables first you may not need them
Make sure shifter is Flat level with the down tube pointing to the head tube (forks)

put the chain onto the smallest cog, tightened up the cable, started pedaling (up on stand) it changed itself to the biggest cog and now moving gear lever doesnt change back it just slackens the cable, dont even know what a high or low gear is so i tried tightening cable to start with on biggest cog. now im about ready to throw the bike over the nearest wall. best bet for a total amateur like me is to go to a bike shop as this is driving me nuts

Re:

Jeepers dude, there are literally dozens of brief instructional videos available on the net, that show you in detailed step-by-step sequential beauty ... exactly how to do what it is that you want to do. Take some initiative, and bone up a tad before embarking on your journey (everybody has to, in the beginning).

Or - just take yer bike in to your local shop ...

Re:

Im having a pretty bad week so the over the wall part may be a tad ott. Ive been scouring youtube but im really not clued up on bicycle gearing. It never did change gear properly from the get go so maybe somethings not right? A kind gentleman has pmd me his number so ima call and see if i can do it

Don't worry mate, I bet it's all fine, just take your time, relax and you will master it

There's a great link to maintenance guides in the mtb section

I will find you the link

ok took the derailer off the back and had a look inside, seems like this little spring (left circle) is supposed to be inside the right hole (right circle) which makes a certain part spring back into place, hense why my gears wont change

can i get this spring back in or should i just get a new derailer? if so what would be a good upgrade

Re:

xxnick1975 thanks for those links ive just learnt alot about setting up the rear mech and which screws do what

as for the spring pictured, i managed to twist it back into the hole with some pliers but it keeps on popping back out after a few gear changes. also the rear flywheel (?the rear part with all the cogs on?) seems to have a slight wobble to it would that be the bearings for rear wheel being knackered?

very out of my depth here and so hard to explain the problems when i dont even know names of parts
