Raleigh Dakota circa '93/94

My pal has one and he won't come out because he is embarrassed about it because it was his first MTB way back and remembers it being kind of heavy compared to his pal's Cannondales and Diamond Backs bitd.

But I say all is not lost for heavy bikes can be made lighter to an extent and anyway the extra weight should get you fitter, it is not as if you are racing, so the weight doesn't matter that much and you could always get off and walk like I do because my bike is heavy and I ain't fit.

So I vaguely remember the name from way back, but what is it like, I was thinking it was red and orange, but that was the Raleigh Yukon I actually used to like bitd and was a contender before I had the lucky purchase of a high spec Saracen. But I am told it is a sort of purple colour with splatters, so maybe a low end bike, but an interesting paint job worth dusting off and showing off ?

So does anyone know anything about the Raleigh Dakota early nineties and are there any pics of one so I can either agree with my pal and let him be, or give him more stick because it can be made better.

yep dakotas were the forerunners to the max range and umm....poo really, hi ten tubing and bottom range shimano. i bought the yukon and loved it to bits and that was pretty low end with only a 501 main frame but it rode just right.

But I am told it has a bit of XT on it, stuff he scrimped and scraped to buy bitd, so if he's after biking which I suspect not otherwise the Dakota would be out by now, he could put the heap on ebay and just type ''retro'' and someone will buy it as it seems ebay is full of junk these days under the retro label.

Well it's Raleigh, unles it's a Raleigh sp like a dyna or USA mtrax they didn't fit anything with xt. The mustang style hiten frames is where is came from they even did a ladies version as well my memory may be failing me but I just remember bikes like the Dakota, amazon, pioneer being our ,bread and butter' bikes we sold loads of.
