Raleigh Competition

Old gh bug

Devout Dirtbag
I have acquired this frame and quite happy with it , but can anyone tell me what’s going on with the paint, it looks original but it appears to have a red undercoat, is this how they get what they call indescent green ?
I’ve checked the dates on frame number and it comes back as an 1983
Any further information would be appreciated
Thanks Garry

A couple more pictures of the frame
It’s in pretty good condition but not as good as I would like so I am not sure where to go with this regarding paint

Respray depends on your budget but I know who I’d be recommending…….

The fact that the red is still in place suggests poor adherence between coats - possibly poor intercoat storage or preparation, or even incompatible paints.
(Yes, I do know what I'm talking about, having spent 20 years writing SOPs for aerospace and military paint application).

Interesting I have looked closely at th paint on this and agree that the second coat is not very well applied (Friday afternoon job )

Raleigh played about with this technique a few years before on the Carlton grand Prix. The colour was fire Red and was a bright yellow undercoat with a red lacquer on top. Fabulous looking finish when polished in the showroom but chipped so easily and looked tatty after a while. After a couple of years they changed to a metallic red.

This is the Raleigh attempt, should be slightly thicker lacquer around the lugs fading to thinner along the main tubes. Brochure pics look good....
