I'm trying to fit what is supposed to be an 1 1/4" quill stem into a 1 1/4" steerer tube and its REALLY REALLY tight.....it shouldn't be that tight should it?

Just measured the quill with digital verniers and its 28.5mm - is this 1 1/4" or have I got the wrong size?

that would be a 1 1/4 quill. anything wrong with the steerer tube? deformed, scratched on the inside, paint, rust etc.?

Thanks (and thanks Mark too :) )

Yeah it is a little rusty inside...i'll try and find a small wirebrush and give it a good clean out...I didn't want to force it in cos it seemed so tight I wouldn't have needed to pull the bolt tight....

It needs to be fairly tight though, doesn't it? A quill is fundamentally a fairly weak connection, so you want there to be no room for movement whatever at the insertion point, to protect the connection from lateral stresses.

You need to grease it well though, so there shouldn't really be rust in there anyway.

use a bit of brush handle with some emery cloth/sandpaper wrapped around it to clean any rust out
