Quick chainring question

I know 9 speed chains are narrower than 8 speed, but i'm guessing the difference is only a couple of mm.

Are all chainrings compatible with both 8 and 9 speed chains? I've seen some rings on CRC described as 8 speed rings or 9 speed rings.

Just picked up some Pace chainrings, not sure of the year, came attached to square taper Race Face Lp's so assuming they're quite old. Think they'll work ok with a 9 speed chain?

Although Shimano would like you to believe otherwise, you should have no problems running nine speed chains on older chainrings.

chainring compatibility

indeed.9 speed chains will work with chainrings dubbed as '7/8 speed'.
the key difference with 9 speed chains is the cassette, the chain is narrower
to match the cassette cogs as they are closer together than 7/8 speed cogs.

that 'mega 9' logo is best kept to its own kind.shifters will also have a closer ratio.

I've had problems on NEW old rings, The teeth are wider (enough to jam in between a narrower chain)

Thats what I was kinda worried about Scrat, trashing a brand new xtr chain, the rings are old but look like they haven't had much use, guess there's only 1 way to find out :D

The inside of the chain is the same width on all of them (7 Speed and up). Some chainsets get problems with the chain getting stuck between the middle and outer, but this seems to be unusual.

I did see something that said Shimano had to change the design of their granny rings for 9 speed set ups. Maybe I was dreaming it.
The other two rings were OK for some reason.

I've used 9 speed chain with 8 speed chainrings with no probs. In fact I don't own any 9 spped chain sets at all. I reularly interchange my chainsets between my 8 speed and 9 speed set ups with no issues.
