Question about Bottom Bracket Choices, (68X118 Shimano UN55 difficult to find)

Hello all

Please can I ask what bottom brackets people recommend these days?

I need a 68X118 square taper BB and my favoured BB is the Shimano UN55. Unfortunately I can't find any suppliers with the 68X118 size in stock.

I'll be happy to read any advice about a BB that's equivalent or better than the UN55 and available in 68X118, (I'm in the UK)?

Thanks,

Richard

UN55 bottom brackets have been phased out by Shimano and replaced by the UN300.

I've had a look at the UK distributor and 68x118mm UN300 BBs are due to be back in stock on 27/04/21.

I've got only good words to say about the £10 VP ones from Halfords; 68x118 available. New unit, solid, and at that price you can stock up!

Personally, I only buy/use un71 or 72.
Something about modern square taper offerings, lump of lead and too tight.
As above, I'd take a UN50/1/2 over a new un26/55.
Un71 can be found for ok money, especially if I'm selling it. Also search 'miche' primate. They do a J.i.s fitting.

To echo the above, if you want quality, try to find NOS or low miles.

Any old Shimano UN7x or UN5x made in Japan you can count on. It's not all about the bearings either, it's about taper precision.
