Problems setting up my xt cantis, rear gears and front mech

I've completed my build on my orange c16 but have encounted set up problems.

XT cantis - I cant seem to get the calipers to work in sync and release off properly. Its like one side works better than the other.

xt rear mech - I'm running 7 speed thumbies with 8 speed cassette but cant for the life of me get the rear mech to change to the smallest cog. I've tried setting up the rear mech to align the jockey wheels but they wont line up at all on the smallest cog so I'm just able to use 7 gears anyway.

xt front mech - well its a bloody big front mech for just changing a few gears. But I not sure where the gear cable goes. I can see the clamp that secure the cable but it doesnt seem to change into the smallest cog. I can take some photos and I do have another xt front mech that is older and more like the kind I have set up before. Its just not as good condition wise.

thanks for any help you can give me :D

Re the mechs - yes, have a look at Sheldon Brown or the Park Tools site e.g. http://www.parktool.com/blog/repair-hel ... djustments

I found the cantis hard to set up too. My ineptitude was finally sorted for me by members on here - viewtopic.php?f=1&t=285636&start=10 with some good advice from fluffychicken and legrandfromage

Place some pics if you've still got problems - I've found folks on here really helpfull.

THis is the first time I've encountered any problems building and setting up a bike. I've got LX and DX canti's on my other two bikes and they were easy to set up and work faultlessly. I was not expecting XT cantos to be such a pain. Makes me wish I'd never bothered. I was originally going to single speed the bike and use v brakes for a change from the normal. Thanks for your link. I'll take a look.

I believe I may have sorted the problem with my rear mech also an xt. I bought a pair of middleton hubbed wheelset and I've had to file down the end caps for the rear wheel to fit in the frame properly. I feel spalying the frame altered the gears not allowing the mech to slip into top gear., I'll put a chain on tomorrow and adjust the dead stops again. The xt front mech I have put on a diferent one also an xt so will see how this works. It would have been cheaper to buy a new bike with all the money wasted on this one. I feel quite down about it. May even sell my other two bikes.

Re:

Just re-read my post. Was not suggesting you were inept but I certainly was when trying to set up my cantis  ! Hope you can get it sorted ok.

Its ok. I knew what you meant and really appreciate your reply 8) . I'll have to check the springs after reading your thread. My cable is sticking aswell even though the outter cable is clear of any obstructions. Its been a stressfull week   lol :D

Cables outers given a squirt of gt85 on assembly? No tight bends? Ferrules all good?

I'll squirt some gr85 tomorrow. Cables seem ok otherwise but I'll double check :D and like you said on the other thread if it still don't work, relax and start again. Thanks for the advice from both threads. REallly helpful 8)
