I suspect someone is a 'Two Ronnies' fan...

Guilty as charged on that front - I am indeed a big fan - though I genuinely didn't know that Barker & Corbett had used a similar newt-based gag in years gone by.

Yeah, it was one of RC's 'throw away' gags when he was in the chair by himself...
