The king of metal polish is Meguiars NXT All Metal Polysh (sic). It will bring ally up to a show standard shine straight from 600 grade sandpaper by hand in no time- its an amazing polish. It is polymer based so only need re-doing every three months in any weather. I have just done the tattiest XT cranks with them and they are stunning- my other cranks still look show standard after 5 weeks and several wet rides.

Thank you Si.

So if I prep the frame with 600 grade wet n dry then apply this? :?

Sounds just the ticket and cheap too

You can do but a quick flash over with wet 1200 after will cut down on the amount of polish you will use.
I'm not sure how much the polish is- this stuff was in the boot of my Mustang when i bought it, its lasted longer than the car so whatever cost its good value! If you cannot find the polish in your local Halfrauds try www.meguiarseurope.com to find a stockist.

Charlie Cunningham advised me to use medium fine steel wool and soapy water for polishing and car wax for protection afterwards on my 1991 Funk and it works like a charm-plus it is cheap!

If you are going to ride the bike I wouldn't bother laquering it. The finish will soon scratch and you'll be back at square one. Use Nitromoors to strip the old laquer off and then polish it using Autosol or similar. Then use a quality car polish like AutoGlym resin car polish to protect your hard earned shine. Picture below shows before and after result using this technique on my Parkpre Pro Image.
