I think you have started off with an excellent 1st retro ride, "Mangalloy" sounds like japanese special material

Looks to have many similar design features to my first Peugeot Ranger in 1988. I'd guess that it would be from around the 1988 - 1990 period.

Having had a look over some old catalogues on t'Internet, it looks aesthetically most similar to the 1989 US Canyon Express, but I guess that might just be the paint job throwing me.

Some more pics of mine here: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=4 ... 143309dced

Everything seems mechanically sound, although I haven't given it a good going over yet. The only major fault is the front mech, which doesn't really offer much choice in chainring selection.

I think I'm going to ride it into work as is tomorrow, just to give it a stress test and find out what else needs sorting!

I know a little bit about this one as I wanted one for my first MTB, ended up with a Raleigh Maverick though.
It was a Halfords bike! HLE tubest was peugeots own brand and was equivalent to Raleighs ATT23 (so not as good as reynolds 500) but to be fair it was well specced, with decent Sachs gear set and alloy rims, with sealed hubs. It cost about £200 new in 1988.

Carl.

Thanks for the info Carl - having done a quick search of the forum, I did pick up on the fact that this was potentially a Halfords own, and therefore didn't appear in Peugeot's official range.

It'll be an interesting project nonetheless!

First ride today, commuting to work!

I wanted to keep it as "as is" as possible before the first outing, just to give it a chance and see what needed replacing afterwards - it was just the brake pads that I swapped out.

Riding it - what can I say? The rear mech needed minimal adjustment, brake levers and shifters are wonderful, wheels go round - apart from the knackered front mech and what sounds like the bearings in the bottom bracket being shot, it's fast and it's got bags of character.

My new weapon of choice!
