Retro Newbie
Hi Guys.

I need a bit of advise? I first brought my Peugeot back in 1998 and have used it on and off over the 16yrs, I recently got back into my cycling which i am really enjoying and will be doing the LDN to Brighton in the next two weeks.

The trouble is that the old Shimano RSX is starting to show wear and the indexing is not working to its best ability. My local bike shop who gave it a service said it would not be cost effective to put a new group set on it, Even though everyone who see's my bike loves it and prefer's it to the new road bike's.

I just need to know how easy it to change the group set on this and what make would work. I really do not want to move over to the carbon bike's they may be lighter and look pretty but they have no soul or character!!!.

Many Thanks

When you say 'starting to show signs of wear' what parts specifically do you mean?

Thanks for the reply.

When changing gears the indexing is not right you have to mess around with the lever to get it in the right gear. The bike shop changed the cable for a new one and tried to set it up as best as they could. They reckon its the levers something has worn inside.

I bet the problem is dirty cables. Fit new cable inners and (especially) outers, flush the shifters through with WD40 and it will index perfectly.

Thanks.. the bike shop put a new cable and outer on it.. I've just soaked it with WD 40 it does seem a bit better. still not 100% it seems to skip from 5th to 7th when i click the shifter but when going up the gears from 7th to 1st it works perfect.

May be try a second hand shifter??

That's what I do, after ensuring the cables are all running perfectly

I'd give it another flush. Typically Shimano grease hardens with age and gums up a couple of the ratchets. The shifters typically fail by jamming (when the lever locks tight) and little else.

Re:

As has been said above 9 out of 10 times its hardened grease on the ratchet pawls. The way that's worked best for me is to turn the bike upside down, get the WD40 tube between the body and the levers and pump WD40 in for a good 60 seconds (A little squirt won't do it :) ). Leave it 5 mins, run it up and down the gears several times and then repeat the WD40.
