Hi I got hold of a Peugeot 531 Pro and am I correct in thinking the frame is Reynolds 531 professional tubing?

The Reynolds Decals on frame and forks are the regular 531 decals as shown however I was thinking of replacing them with a set of these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Reynolds-531-...Cycling_Parts_Accessories&hash=item45f831e5df

Am I committing Sin and likely to be ostracized by the cycling community and put on a wanted list for crimes against Peugeot.

Or will I be truly representing what the frame tubing really is and thus suggesting I have far too much time on my hands and really should be out riding it anyway :D

The model might be a Professional but it looks to me as though the frameset is 531 main tubes and fork blades only rather than a full tubeset like 531 Pro or 531c; if the chain & seat stays are also 531 the tubing transfer usually mentions this.

I'm not 100% on this, but I think 531pro disappeared sometime late 80's and was replaced by 653. I dont recall bikes being built with 531 pro after this time (a small custom builder might have had some in stock, but not a major player like pug). Those who wanted something lighter than 531C, but couldnt afford 753 went for 653.
FWIW, I think 531C was a better tubeset than 531P - much stronger for not much more weight. 531SL and then its replacement 531P always seemed a bit fragile. Many top level teams rode 531C to success

Going off-topic a bit here but 531c is a very under-rated tubeset; built well it makes for a great ride (my Orbit America compares favourably with both my previous 631 welded frame and the carbon Look I had before that) but back in the day was often in the shadow of 753.

The frame looks identical in construction to the Peugeot Optimum which was 531 main tubes and fork blades only.

I think 531c is a quality tubeset too, I'm lacking one in my collection at the moment as I sold mine to my cousin - he prefers it to his carbon race bike!

Cheers, Ian

Thx for the replies :)

BTW does anybody have a scan of the brochure that this bike was in and can anyone confirm that it is a 1992 model?

Many Thx

I used to have a 531c many years ago. It represents the best balance of just about any frame ive ridden. The 653 frame ive got now is very similar in ride terms.

Interestingly i have another frame from the same maker (Pug), in the same size and dimensions but just with 531 main tubes. Ride quality isnt half as good on this frame.

I think the forks make a big difference - and in the case his are 531. Looks like a nice ride :)

I *think* 531 pro and 653 are the same thing - but 653 is a bit of a hybrid, it's a mixture of tubes - the stays are 753 for example.

There was a Peugeot built with 531pro - it was red/black/white, but it's an early80's bike.

i have brochures from 88,90 and 91 somewhere, i also have a 1990 Optimum with 531 (purple and yellow), the 91 model was still called the Optimum and iirc was silver, i'd confidently say yours does not predate 1992
