Peugeot, 531 or not?

I'm refurbing a late 80s Peugeot, the frame has a '531 butted frame tubes' sticker at the top of the down tube where it meets the head tube, it looks the same age and condition as the other decals on the bike and according to the Peugeot booklet from then 531 was an option with this model.

How can I be sure? I've read that a 531 frame 99% of the time should have a 27.2 seatpost, this is 26.2. I think the standard build for this model was 501. Are all 531 frames lugged in some form or another?

I'll still refurb it whatever it is, but it's gone for a powder coat and when it comes back I'd like to put an original set of decals back on it but I'm unsure whether to refit a 531 decal or not :?

That was the standard location for the 531 sticker on 80s Peugeots. I can't see you need to have any reason to doubt it's 531. I had a 531 Peugeot, built in around 1983, which had a 26.4 seat post. (It was one of my favourite frames, and did about 60,000 miles before a chainstay snapped).

Having said all that, I seem to remember that the "butted frame tubes" stickers implied that seat and chainstays could be something else, but the main tubes will be 531.

Indeedy. Older 531 stickers for all-531 builds will say something like "Main tubes, fork blades and stays" underneath the number. More modern decals refer to the tubeset (Competition, All Terrain, Super Tourist etc.).

Thanks guys. The thing that has me wondering is that if you type the model into google images all of the pictures show a 501 sticker :?

Well, my memory is a bit hazy (my shop used to sell Peugeots), but I'd have said 501. However, it's possible that the name was used for more than one spec, either in different years or export markets.

Hopefully someone will have a better memory than me! Sorry I can't help more.
