PayPal woes

Wow
This sounds crazy, I have never heard of a bank asking for business details once a certain amount of cash goes through an account, or a credit card for that matter, why would they care? Isn't it the job of the tax dept to worry about that? even if paypal is obliged to let the powers be know how much money you're moving around they shouldn't have to handle any details beyond his name is Joe Blow and $45,000 passed through his account this year.

How does a service like this get away with behaving like an authority?

At the very least i has to be some of the sloppiest customer relations around.. constantly bombarding you with "use paypal for everything" advertising and then freezing your account when you hit a limit with no warning.

Wow

Paypal can be the devil, if they choose.

no, seriously, it's in their TOS; got to read the details/fine print.

I had exactly the same problem last year and it was a right pain in the arse. TBH though, after I updated my details and did the bank confirmation thing (think they post 10p to your account then you send it back, something like that?) it all went back to normal. Don't think I'm classed as a business and don't seem to get charged any more then I used to?

It's because they charge more fees for business users.

There must be more to it that a simple 1200 limit as people do sell high value items on ebay, some bikes for that much, and cars. So I cannot see one transaction resulting in your account being locked and forced into business use. There must be a limit on the number of transactions as well as total value.

The sooner paypal comes under the FSA the better.

That's the problem, they are classed as a holding bank and as such do not come under the normal banking regulations. Hence they can do what they want.

Bloody hell :?

I'm looking forward to the day that there are some alternatives.. Some healthy competition would do paypal a world of good.

I usually ignore these kinds of threads as it just gets me so damn riled up! If I ever actually read the paypal TOS I'd most likely make the news the following day.

Oh the humanity gaaaaaaaahHHHH

Thanks all for your input, I've held off replying until I'd heard from PayPal.

I used the number Russell provided above and got through to a nice PayPal representative within two minutes. He talked me through altering my account details and lifted the restriction while on the phone. All this took around 5 mins max.

The problem did stem from me stating I was non profit, I've now changed my account description to private individual, category to household and sub category to something or other that was listed.

The rep told me that I shouldn't have any further issues with my account.

With any luck this will help anybody else that's in a similar situation.

One thing I will say, try to call them during working hours, it's a lot easier to get connected, especially if you do this close to 5pm when most businesses are packing up.

Cheers all.

Nick
