part chroming to save original paint

Hi i have recently bought a frame, the chroming on the rear stays is shot.
do you know, can i get this re-chromed and the rest of the frame left alone ?
it is literaly the last third of all the stays.

Its always chrome first, paint second.

It can't be done the other way around because of the prep work needed on the steel before plating, even with the paint masked it can contaminate the chrome or the chemicals can contaminate the paint.

i see , i cut my thumb on the flaky chrome last nite im going to have to regroup and look for a compromise. even
those silver spray paints are no where near like chrome . perhaps a massive load of metalflake on a silver under coat . thanks robbied. ps what ratio oxallic powder to water do i need? can i brush it on leave for a few hours and rinse off ?

Someone's been doing their research

I mix oxallic powder at about 4 slightly heaped tablespoons in a pint of warm water. It really needs to soak for about 24hrs so you could do with a large bowl and prop up the frame with the stays submerged. You might have to do the chain stays then turn it and do the seat stays. I've not tried it, but I've heard you can make a paste with oxallic and wall paper paste, that way it will stay on without having to soak. I'd follow that with the 0000 grade steel wool dipped in oil. If you've got small flaked areas some humbrol silver paint touched up with a small brush will help disguise any badly flaked bits.

i'll try cause its an interesting find on ebay 'wikepedia kogamiyata 1982 catologue p14 roadracer ' i got fed up with looking at colnagos and merckx. and their prices. a name i had not heard of for a while koga i typed in . it came up as a barn find ! i really like the bands on the seat post[a kind of retro even for the 80/s],chrome on forks is ok and what i did find interesting is a large transparent dust cap on the shimano head set.£114+d not a great bargain, although the arebesgue drive bits are worth that alone. the rear quarter chrome area is de laminating fierce ,rust has worked underneath the chrome. although ok at the drop outs. thats the only disapointment.

re-chrome depends on the kind of tubing you have as over the years chrome eats away at the tubing so wall thickness's need to be checked before thoughts of re-chroming can go ahead.

imagine that one ! youve just got it up and running, your going fast down hill and your back end waves good by !
'chrome can eat away at certain tubing over years 'm interesting mettalurgy phenomonun.
koga miyata seem to use mainly two types of steel tubing, both are double butted, one mentions chrome the other is titled manganese .the rd racer is made from manga steel double butted and its not very light , being no 6 in the line up, with the ' full pro' at the top
I was m' ming and r' ring i wanted a retro build with bb made from bits and non aero brake levers and toe straps,something with character[perhaps to do the leroica one day]
i kind of saw myslf trying to surf an enviroment ruled by greedy dealer's with cyber search engines
that had been designed by IT consultants[was i dilluded ?] i guess £300 is ok for a frame set. £500 nah not at the mo mate.i got this frame as a result of it being poorly listed under a heading 'bicycle frames' with thousands of other items within that heading and by typing in the make, was able to sift through. :xmas-cool:
