Afternoon,

Sorry, it wasn't meant to be this wordy..

I'm trying to turn my 93 KHS Montana Pro frame and forks into 93 KHS Montana Team which involves changing the colour from metallic purple to a blue frame with a pink seat tube and forks. I have owned my 92 KHS Montana Pro since new so having 2 identical purple bikes because I could didn't add up in my mind (YMMV!). I've been to see an RB member 125 miles from me who has an original bike for reference. We've taken his frame to a local Auto paint shop and matched the colours up to their suppliers sample swatches. We got near perfect matches and were very pleased with ourselves.

I sent those colours and references from that paint supplier to the bike shop who are painting my bike. And they don't use that paint manufacturer. They exclusively use another. I've contacted their manufacturer (HMG) and emailed them the pics and references from the other manufacturer (Lechler). And they can't provide a match for either. Aargh.

I am hindered by the fact that 'my' bike shop is 60 miles from home and I only get chance to go there every few months. They are decent chaps and have a good reputation (or did when I lived there) locally. They also insist on using a company for the decals who I have to chase every few weeks for an update then get an email a fortnight later of images that need more work then chase again a few weeks later ad infinitum.. Can you tell I'm getting frustrated here?

What would you do? Pay up for what my bike shop have done so far (stripped a bike of all components and blasted the frame in preparation for paint) and take my frame and forks and sundry bits away to somewhere closer to home (in the east midlands ideally) that paints with Lechler paints? and engage Gil_M for decals (this bit is a no brainer)? Then the next question is who can paint with Lechler paints or how do the rest of you get bikes painted in a specific colour if you only have a reference from one paint manufacturer? I am slightly obsessive and believe if you are going to do something then do it well once.
I do travel between the east mids and Hampshire regularly with work and also to the sheffield area so can anyone reccomend a decent paint shop in these 3 areas (that ideally uses Lechler paints!) please?

Am I looking at this from the wrong angle? Should I be looking for an Auto body shop that uses Lechler paints and get them to paint my bike?? Or do I need to pay the kind RB'er anther visit and take his original frame and forks to another paint shop local to him that does HMG paint then rinse and repeat the colour matching process despite HMG not having anything on file as matching according to their technical colour matching team...?

Help!!!!!

Thanks

James

I'd thought the simplest solution would be to buy the paint yourself and give it to the bike shop and explain the situation they will either take on the work or not in which case pay them for the work done and find a body shop to do it for you with your paints.

Re:

My bike shop will only paint with hmg paints. Sorry, thought I'd written that. Hmg don't have the colours I want. Lechler do. The uv resistant lacquer for the pink paint is £100 a litre as the minimum quantity and I don't need anywhere near that according to the auto paint shop I got the paint matched at. That is a lot of money for a layer of lacquer for a fork and a tube. Hence me asking can anyone recommend a decent person or company in the East Midlands, Sheffield or the Basingstoke area as I'm hoping they will have sprayed fluorescent paint before and have their own uv stock of uv resistant lacquer... am happy to buy my own paint but wouldn't have a clue how much to buy and frankly am fed up so just want one bill from a reputable company for high quality work.

So, Any recommendations for a decent place to get my frame and forks painted in or near the above locations? I'm accepting the current place are not much use to me now and I need another bike painters.

Thanks

James

Re:

I know for a fact (well, at least when I worked at my last job.... sign manufacturer) that if you take a sample to HMG in Manchester, they will colour match anything foer you there and then

That was 3years ago so may have changed now. I was very impressed by their setup tho. Right mix of new tech and old school manufacturing

Re:

Hi,

I used a standard 2k lacquer on my 1990 Greg Lemond tvt replica. It has fluorescent yellow on the forks and downtube. It hasn't visibly faded in the last year. Just keep it out of the sunshine when not using it. Easy here in Ireland :(

Regards,

Pat
