Pace RC100 build XTR Front mech??

Hi!
***Virgin Retrobiker alert***

I have acquired a Pace RC100 frame and trying a sympathetic build, if not exactly period correct (It has had an RC-35 Kevlar fork and an XTR M900 rear mech hanging off it and I don't think that's quite right). :D

I have a problem at the minute in that the Sachs front mech is knackered and won't shift properly as a result. Been looking for an M900 XTR front mech to match the back as a replacement for the Sachs but cannot for the life of me find one with a braze on fitting, they're all clamp ons! Then it occurred to me they might not have even made braze on XTRs! Does anyone know any info on this?

Happy to take suggestions on alternative mechs in any case - and I do need help with this - have been into road bikes since I was 18 so haven't touched a MTB for about 14 years! Were the Sachs ones any good to begin with?

The (white) Bullseye cranks are a bit worse for wear, I'm toying with the idea of getting them restored and painted to look after them but open to ideas. I have got some wheels with Mavic 231 rims as I remember these being about (perhaps not in 1991 though...not sure), I've stuck a riser bar I had laying around on it but keeping an eye out for an appropriate flat bar, feel free to advise.

Cheers!

A nice little project as a starter...

Front mech, you won't find an M900 braze on mount, as far as I'm aware they never made one. Look for Mavic or Campag you might find an XT braze on but from memory the mount angle is slightly out - Look for the others first

Crank, if the BB is running well, I would live with the wear to the arms, the BB is a weak spot so look after it

Assume Stem/Steerer is in place?

Should be able to find a nice flat bar without too much bother, Tioga, Renthal, ideally a Reynolds 531 bar with a nice bend to it

Good Luck

Re:

Thanks!

I'll look out for the bits you mentioned.

The stem is an old Planet X one, from what I gather the original fork had an integral stem/steerer, so as it's a newer fork, I have a conventional stem/steerer set up.

Re:

The one piece stem/steerer should fit any Pace fork crown, if you still have it, so would fit the RC35's. Otherwise, there's a chap here who can make a new one, exact replica, which will look amazing - that's what I'd do.
Are you using Magura brakes?

That IS interesting! Have no previous experience with these stem/steerers but I'll have a look into that. Who is the chap who makes them?

Yes, I've got some yellow raceline Maguras. It's taken me a long time to work out what's going on at the back (no canti studs), but I ordered some four bolt clamps which I will fit this weekend.

Re:

They did a band on style XTR, so you may be able to bodge a braze on mount somehow. Same with XT/DX, in fact same mech, different paint job iirc.

Suntour XC Pro with the removable band/braze on is a nice choice.

Re:

A band on fitting and braze on fitting is very different, it really would be a " bodge" if you were to try and use one of those

Just look out for a Mavic or Campagnolo one and you can't go wrong ;)

Re:

my RC200 F2 came (second hand in 1995) with what I thought was a Mavic front mech and M900 every where else.
Then I came across this ....http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Suntour-Derai ... SwF1dUSCke and ordered one

Turned out to be identical, I can only think someone back in the early 90's polished off the Suntour logo, happy runs with a 48t chainring but sadly 50t is just a tad too big :(

I'm sure I saved the old one (I'll have to check) but if you want to try my old one for fit you can have it for the cost of a stamp, it works just fine but after 23yrs its a bit tarnished and I don't like/do "Patina"

I know, luckily it's not me doing the bodge, would be interesting to see someone try, grind a bit out and make a braze on part you could screw to keeping it all in the correct place...
The suntour XC also works fine too as seen on many rc100 iirc

Gil, didn't the earlier RC100s actually use the band-on mech before they moved to braze on? Just bent it to the square shape. Sure it was in some retrobike history lesson.
