Just picked up what I believe is a 94 Clockwork. It was cheap enough but has issues with forks and headset. Someone has fitted diamond back forks with a steerer that is too long, to get them to 'fit' they have put spacers under the fork race! Combine this with a headset that's compiled from about 3 different brands the whole thing is in a state of collapse.

So what i need to know is what length steerer do I need for my 19" frame and what type/size headset do I need? I know it's a 1" threaded system, maybe one for Orange gurus to answer.

For now the Clockwork is relegated to the back of the garage, behind my good lady's Raleigh Misty, to teach it a lesson.

Many thanks

why have you got spacers on the crown? is it coz otherwise there isn't enough thread on the fork? sounds a bit dodgy

and my spare (but not for sale) correct original clockwork fork is 164mm long steerer wise and that would be using a shimano xt headset with a couple of spacers.

i would suggest fitting the fork with the headset, then cutting to the correct length, but sounds like you might need to cut some more thread on the fork.

Yes there are spacers because otherwise there would not be enough thread, that's how it was when I picked it up. I want to change the forks as they are pants, I will need another headset too.

So is your Orange a 19" too... so 164 steerer is what I'm looking for?

Should be 1" threaded headsets still available if you search about the net. The tange ones are fine. If you get desperate then shimano 105 racing bike ones are fine. Ritchey logic ones seem to come up on here occasionally. Think your fork should be 1" iso rather than 1"JIS which is what early nineties far eastern built frames had.
By the way , have at look at forks in my for sale thread and let me know if they'd be any good to you.

yeah, mines a 19".

if the fork itself is ok i would get some thread cut down on it then buy a headset and then cut the steerer length to fit.

if the fork is a bit poo then i'd recommend an rc30 (if you can't get the genuine one), i have them in 2 other bikes and they ride nice, specifically the early 531 legged version.

If the steerer is too long and the thread cut too short...Why not cut more thread  :D

Im pretty sure theres a few here that own dies to cut the 1" thread :?.

Failing that a decent shop should be able to do it.

Measure the headtube with a ruler.
Then look for a headset, it will have a stack height.

you fork needs to be as long as the headtube+stack height of headset.
any your threading needs to be a good half-inch less than that just to make sure, the more the merrier.
You can always cut a fork down to length.

1" headset readily available on 'tinternet, just tap 1 inch headset in to google and hit shopping.

OR go aheadset style ?

bin the forks and go threadless if your not bothered about period correctness,

or for what a lbs are gonna charge to cut more threads you could buy a nice set of forks anyway and you could look for something more in keeping with the orange, or with the spacers removed could you run the forks threadless , is there enough steerer using a low stack one inch headset?

just a thought

there is too much steerer. It's about an inch over. Where the fork bearing race would normally be there is an inch worth of spacer, then the fork race, so the forks appear to be hanging out the bottom of the head tube! I've never seen such a bodge job.

I don't like the forks so they're goin and the headset is knackered so that's going. Thanks for all your replies, I now better understand what my options are
