Old klein

Retro Newbie
Is it possible to upgrade the drive train on my 90,91 klein from sun tour xc 7 sp to new shimano or sram. Does the bb have to be changed, I know this could cost but I can't afford a new bike, this is my bike for life just trying to keep it alive. I like to go 1x 10. But I have my doubts if its possible. Any help would be appreciated.

Re:

MoDern chainset use external bb bearings e.g. shimano or sram gxp. These will fit without issues, the shimano comes with spacer for fitting to different bb widths.

Or internal bearing e.g. bb30/pf30 which i dont think youll be able to fit.

To go 10 spd, i think needs 8/9 speed freehub, the 7 speed being too narrow.

Re:

Personal choice of course, and you say this is a 'bike for life', but you could be surprised how much your Klein is worth (even the old Suntour parts) if you wanted to sell and then buy a new bike...

Klein bikes have pressed in BB bearings and axle. You can not fit todays standard BB to those frames! So you will have to stay with your current crank type. But there are plenty of new chain rings that you can fit to those old cranks. So no real problem here.

What type of Klein frame do you have?

I would assume, your frame has a 130mm rear axle spacing. For 10speed, you need 135mm. Could be trouble on a stiff aluminium frame.

Pinnacle , black with green flames, pre trek, mission control, campy thor rims, full xc.I'm working on a picture. I have kept it as I bought it ,except some diff.brakes and I replaced the rear derailer once with the same period xc.thanks for the help.

I would have no problem selling parts but not the bike, it does beat me up a little ( no suspension), but it's a beast on climbs and so responsive in singletrack. Working on a picture. Thanks
